“TO GAIN THAT WHICH IS WORTH HAVING, IT
MAY BE NECESSARY TO LOSE EVERYTHING ELSE.”
                                  JOSHEPHINE (BERNADETTE DEVLIN) McALISKEY

This quote brought me to a time for reflection. I reflected on the years
of developing a friendship and relationship with the Lord. I was able
to look where I am now in the relationship and what I had to do to
totally follow Him……I rarely get it 100%, but work on it daily.
When I was younger and dealing with my demons I had such a whacked
out perception of what I felt was the key to my happiness; what and
whom I needed to surround myself to make myself complete. Everything
was done in excess even if it meant doing harm to myself.
Little by little He started showing me His way. His way meant I
might have to purge not only things, but people as well. I found there was
a difference between friends and acquaintances. Once I started making
changes for the better the acquaintances started disappearing. My new
life showed me I had choices. I found I no longer needed to just go along with everything.
Doing with less things and certain types of people has made me a happier
and better person.
Each day is a day of growth spiritually. I don’t use a spiritual measuring
stick to see how I am progressing, I just allow it.
As I grow older my circle of friends become smaller….and that’s okay. I
want to surround myself with people with whom we can lift up one another. It’s no longer a popularity contest or who has the latest this or that or whose house is bigger and how it is filled. It’s about serving the Lord and realizing you can do much for Him by giving yourself to Him.
“Jesus then said to his disciples: ‘If a man wishes to come after me, he must

deny his very self, take up his cross, and begin to follow in my footsteps.

Whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for

my sake will find it. What profit would a man show if he were to gain

the whole world and destroy himself in the process? What can a man

offer in exchange for his very self ?”   Matthew 16:24-26
